The International Helicopter Safety Team will sponsor four free workshops at the HAI HeliExpo event in Dallas. All four of the education sessions will take place on Saturday, Feb. 11th at the Dallas Convention Center They will focus on helping operators, pilots, trainers, and mechanics develop a new safety culture. Listed below is a brief description of each workshop.
9:00 am to 11:30 am, IHST Infrastructure Workshop – Mr. Thomas Judge, CCTP
Building on the workshops at the 2011 HeliExpo and IHSS meetings, this workshop will review current helicopter infrastructure issues and what is needed to move to a complete low level IFR / performance based navigational system to bring helicopters in order to improve system safety and reliability.
10:30 am to 12:30 pm, SMS & Decision Making Workshop, Mr. Fred Brisbois, CHCM & Dave Huntzinger, PhD, CSP, FRAeS
This session will provide an overview of the IHST’s Safety Management System including discussions on the priorities and sequence of implementing the various attributes of a Safety Management System. Participants will gain insight into how to prioritize their SMS implementation strategies. A review and practical exercise of ’just culture’ will also be featured. The second half of this workshop will focus on pilot decision making (DM): it includes a review of DM theory and processes, a review of case studies to gain insight into common errors and techniques using a Flight Risk Assessment Tool to improve decision making.
12:30 pm to 1:30 pm, Report from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University On Research to Support IHST’s Accident Reduction Goals – Ms. Katherine Hilst
This presentation will summarize the research completed by Embry Riddle Aeronautical University to identify the best training strategies and products to support the recommendations of the IHST’s goal to reduce the worldwide helicopter accident rate by 80%. The session will encompass system safety, aviator learning and teaching modalities for development of effective training strategies and educational products.
1:30 pm to 5:30 pm, IHST Safety Intervention Strategy Workshop – Mr. Stuart “Kipp” Lau
This session will summarize the IHST’s analysis of U.S. accidents and present the top twenty recommended intervention strategies to reduce the helicopter accident rate. Topics will encompass training, flight data monitoring, maintenance, safety management systems and other technologies that enhance rotorcraft safety. The IHST will facilitate discussions with attendees on how they can best implement these interventions in their operations.
