The International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST), formed in 2006, is comprised of a team of helicopter community stakeholders dedicated to reducing helicopter accidents by 80% in ten years.  This ambitious goal is being pursued by adapting proven analytical methods developed in the commercial fixed wing aviation arena.  The foundation of these safety recommendations is the IHST/USJHSAT report which was developed by a team of analysts from the US helicopter manufacturing, operating and regulatory communities using US NTSB helicopter accident reports which carefully documented hundreds of accidents.  Details of the analytical process used can be found on our web site, ihst.org.

Analyses conducted by the IHST indicate that small and medium sized helicopter operations would benefit significantly implementing these recommendations.  IHST also recognizes that larger operators have additional means within their company infrastructure to develop and support more sophisticated safety measures. This self assessment tool is intended to provide small and medium sized operators and private pilots an opportunity to assess their operation relative to key IHST recommendations for the US fleet.   Use of these recommendations does not guarantee risk free operation of helicopters; however, it does provide insight on those aspects of helicopter operation that if fully embraced, will significantly reduce helicopter operational risks.

IHST makes these recommendations with the belief that they are attainable with currently available technology, systems and practices.
